Trading Gold (XAU/USD) at a Prop Firm: Sizing, Volatility and Rules
How to trade gold on a funded account without breaching: contract size, lot size examples, when gold moves most, and the rules that apply.

Gold is one of the most popular instruments with funded traders. It trends well, reacts clearly to US data and has plenty of movement during the London and New York sessions. That same movement is why gold breaches more prop firm accounts than almost any currency pair. The trades aren't harder; the sizing is just different. This guide explains how gold is priced, how to size it, and how to keep it inside your loss limits.
Key points
- One standard lot of gold is commonly 100 ounces, so a $1 price move is worth about $100 per lot.
- Gold can move many dollars in minutes, so positions are much smaller than on major currency pairs for the same risk.
- Gold moves most during the London and New York sessions and around US data releases.
- Check the contract size and spread in your platform before your first gold trade.
How gold is priced
XAU/USD is the price of one troy ounce of gold in US dollars. On most CFD platforms, one standard lot is 100 ounces, so:
- 1 lot: a $1 move is worth about $100
- 0.1 lots: a $1 move is worth about $10
- 0.01 lots: a $1 move is worth about $1
Contract sizes can differ between platforms, so open the instrument's details in TradeLocker or MT5 and confirm the size before you trade. See the platforms page for both.
How to size a gold trade
Use the same approach as any other instrument: decide the dollar risk first, place the stop where the idea is wrong, then calculate the size.
Lot size = risk in dollars ÷ (stop distance in dollars × 100)
Example: on a $100K account you risk 0.5%, which is $500. Your stop is $8 away from entry. The size is 500 ÷ (8 × 100) = 0.62 lots, rounded down. If the stop needs to be $15 away, the size is 500 ÷ (15 × 100) = 0.33 lots.
Compare that with EUR/USD, where the same $500 risk on a 25-pip stop is 2 lots. Traders who carry their forex lot sizes over to gold take on several times the risk without noticing. More examples are in our guide to prop firm lot size.
When gold moves most
Gold is usually quietest in the Asian session and most active from the London open through the New York afternoon. The biggest moves tend to come around US releases such as non-farm payrolls, CPI inflation data and Federal Reserve decisions.
Spreads also change through the day. They're usually tightest when London and New York overlap, and wider around the daily rollover and major news. You can watch live gold prices on the live spreads page. For session times, read the best forex trading sessions.
Keeping gold inside your loss limits
- Use a hard stop on every trade. A $20 move against an unprotected 1-lot position is a $2,000 loss.
- Cut size around news. Price can jump past your stop on a big release, so the real loss can be larger than planned.
- Don't stack gold with correlated trades. Gold often moves against the US dollar, so long gold and short USD/CHF at the same time can act like one large position.
- Know your limits in dollars. On a $100K Two Step account the daily limit is $5,000. Use the drawdown calculator for your size.

Frequently asked questions
Can I trade gold on a Clarity Traders account?
Yes. You can trade forex, gold and indices on Instant, One Step and Two Step accounts.
What lot size should I use for gold on a $100K account?
It depends on your stop. At $500 risk, a $5 stop allows 1 lot and a $10 stop allows 0.5 lots. Always calculate from the stop distance.
Is gold good for beginners on a funded account?
It can be, if you size it correctly. Many beginners start with EUR/USD and add gold once their sizing is automatic, because gold's speed punishes mistakes quickly.
