Is a Prop Firm Legit? 9 Checks to Make Before You Buy a Challenge

Nine practical checks to make before paying for a prop firm challenge, from published rules and payout proof to hidden restrictions and support.

There are now hundreds of prop firms, and they aren't all the same. Some have clear rules and a long record of paying traders. Others hide restrictions in their terms, change rules after you've bought, or are slow to pay. A few minutes of checking before you buy can save you a fee and a lot of frustration. Here are nine checks that apply to any firm, including us.

Key points

  • Read the full rules and terms before you pay, not just the headline numbers.
  • Look for payout evidence you can check, not just marketing claims.
  • Watch for restrictions that only appear on funded accounts.
  • Understand what you're buying: most prop firm accounts are simulated.

1. Understand what you're buying

Most prop firms, including Clarity Traders, give you a simulated account that uses virtual capital. You pay a fee for an evaluation or an instant account, and if you trade well, the firm pays you a share of your simulated gains as a reward. A legit firm says this plainly. Be wary of any firm that implies you're trading its real money or promises guaranteed income.

2. Read the full rules and terms

The headline rules (profit target, daily and maximum loss) are only part of the picture. A good firm publishes a plain summary and full terms that you can read before you buy. Clarity's summary is on the trading rules page, and the Terms & Conditions take priority.

3. Look for hidden restrictions

These are the rules most likely to catch traders out:

  • News trading bans, especially ones that only apply to funded accounts
  • Rules on holding trades overnight or over the weekend
  • Minimum holding times or banned strategies
  • Consistency rules on payouts
  • Limits on Expert Advisors and copy trading
  • Inactivity rules

None of these are red flags on their own; most firms have some. The red flag is finding them only after you've paid.

4. Check the payout terms

Find out how often you can request a payout, how long it takes, which methods are offered, and what share you keep. Check whether the split changes over time. Clarity's schedule and reward models are on how payouts work and the rewards page.

5. Look for payout evidence

Screenshots on social media are easy to fake. Look for something more checkable, such as a public leaderboard or payout record, and for traders discussing their payouts on independent forums and review sites.

6. Read reviews carefully

Independent review sites are useful, but read the negative reviews, not just the star rating. Look at what people complain about. Complaints about breaking a clearly published rule tell you less than repeated complaints about refused or delayed payouts.

7. Check the platform and trading conditions

A firm should tell you which platforms you'll use and let you see its trading conditions. Spreads, commissions and execution all affect whether your strategy works. Clarity uses TradeLocker and MT5, and you can watch live prices on the live spreads page.

8. Test the support

Ask a question before you buy. How fast is the reply, and does it actually answer you? If support is slow when you're a potential customer, it's unlikely to improve when you're waiting on a payout.

9. Compare total cost, not just price

A cheap challenge with tight limits can cost more in retries than a pricier one you're likely to pass. Add up the fee, any add-ons you need, and whether the fee is refunded. Read prop firm fees explained for what to include.

Red flags

  • Promises of guaranteed income or "no risk"
  • Rules that are hard to find or change without notice
  • Pressure to buy immediately with countdown timers and no clear terms
  • Repeated reports of refused payouts for vague reasons
  • No way to contact a real person

Frequently asked questions

Are prop firms a scam?

Not inherently. A prop firm sells access to an evaluation or a simulated funded account and pays rewards to traders who meet its rules. The model works when the rules are clear and payouts are made as promised. Problems arise with firms that hide rules or refuse payouts, which is why the checks above matter.

Are Clarity Traders accounts real money?

No. All Clarity Traders accounts are simulated and use virtual capital. Rewards are based on your simulated trading performance.

How do I know my payout will be paid?

Read the payout conditions before you buy, and follow them. At Clarity, payouts are paid in USDT every 14 days, or weekly with the Express Payouts add-on, once you meet the rules. See how payouts work.
