Holding Trades Over the Weekend at a Prop Firm: Rules and Gap Risk
Weekend holding is allowed at some prop firms and banned at others. Here is how weekend gaps work, how they interact with loss limits and a Friday checklist for holding safely.

Key takeaways
- Clarity Traders allows holding positions over the weekend on all account types.
- Markets can open on Monday at a very different price, and stops can be filled past their level.
- Size weekend positions so a gap of twice your stop distance stays well inside your loss limits.
- Decide on Friday, with a checklist, rather than leaving open trades by default.
Some prop firms force you to close every trade before the weekend. Others, including Clarity Traders, let you hold. Being allowed to hold does not remove the risk. Prices can open on Sunday evening or Monday morning far from where they closed on Friday. This guide explains weekend gaps, how they interact with prop firm loss limits, and how to decide what to hold.
What is a weekend gap?
The forex market closes on Friday evening and reopens on Sunday evening (New York time). News, elections or central bank comments over the weekend can change prices while the market is closed. When trading resumes, the first price can be well above or below Friday’s close. That jump is a gap.
Gaps are usually small on major pairs, but occasionally they are large. You cannot trade inside a gap, so a stop-loss inside the gap is filled at the first available price.
Prop firm weekend rules
- Allowed: you may hold positions over the weekend. This is the rule at Clarity Traders.
- Not allowed: all positions must be closed before the market break, or the account may be breached.
- Depends on account type: some firms allow it on certain account types or charge an add-on.
If you trade at more than one firm, check each one. A habit that is fine at one firm can breach an account at another.
How a gap affects your loss limits
Imagine a $100,000 Two Step account with a 5% daily limit ($5,000) and an 8% maximum loss limit. On Friday you hold 2 lots of EUR/USD with a 30-pip stop, which risks about $600. Over the weekend major news moves the market, and it opens 90 pips beyond your stop. Your loss is around $2,400 instead of $600.
That is still inside both limits, but it is four times what you planned. If you had held three correlated positions the same way, the gap could have approached the daily limit on Monday morning.
Weekend holding and news trading are allowed on every Clarity account.

A Friday checklist
- Is the trade part of your plan as a swing position, or are you holding because you do not want to take the loss?
- What is the worst realistic gap? Assume at least twice your stop distance.
- Does that loss fit inside your limits, together with all other open trades?
- Is there weekend event risk, such as elections, summits or scheduled announcements?
- Can you reduce size rather than closing completely?
- Have you moved stops to lock in profit where it makes sense?
If any answer worries you, reduce or close. You can always re-enter on Monday.
Which trades are better to hold?
- Better candidates: swing trades in profit with stops at break-even or better, in liquid major pairs.
- Poor candidates: losing trades you are hoping will recover, positions in thin or exotic pairs, and large positions close to a loss limit.

Weekend gaps and the daily limit
A Monday gap counts toward that trading day. If you start Monday close to your daily limit from open positions, a gap can use most of your daily room before you can react. This is another reason to keep total weekend exposure small. Read Daily Drawdown vs. Maximum Drawdown for how each limit is measured.
Gold, indices and weekend risk
Gold and stock indices can gap more than major currency pairs, especially around geopolitical news. If you hold them over the weekend, use smaller sizes than you would for a major pair with the same stop distance.

Frequently asked questions
Can I hold trades over the weekend at Clarity Traders?
Yes. Weekend holding is allowed on Instant, One Step and Two Step accounts. You are responsible for any gap risk.
Will my stop-loss protect me from a gap?
It will close the trade, but at the first available price after the market reopens, which may be worse than your stop level.
Do crypto or index CFDs trade at weekends?
Trading hours depend on the instrument and platform. Check the trading hours on your platform for each instrument you hold.
Is it better to close everything on Friday?
Not always. Swing traders often hold by design. The key is to size weekend positions for the worst realistic gap, not the normal stop.
