From Funded Account to Your Own Capital: What Changes and How to Start

Many funded traders eventually want to trade their own money too. Here's what changes when you move from a simulated funded account to a live broker account, and how to make the switch carefully.

A funded account lets you trade a large simulated balance and earn rewards without risking your own savings on each trade. After a few payouts, many traders start to wonder about the next step: trading some of their own capital as well. It can work, but the rules of the game change in ways that are easy to underestimate.

Key takeaways

  • A prop firm account is simulated; a broker account trades real money in the live market.
  • Nobody enforces loss limits on your own account, so you need to set and keep your own.
  • Start with a demo, then a small live balance, before adding more.
  • Many traders keep their funded accounts and run a personal account alongside them.

What changes when the money is yours

Your losses are real

On a Clarity Traders account, the most you can lose is the fee you paid. On a live broker account, every losing trade comes out of your own balance. Leverage can magnify losses as well as gains, and markets can gap through a stop.

There are no rules unless you write them

Funded accounts come with a daily loss limit, a maximum loss limit and a consistency rule. They can feel restrictive, but they also protect you from your worst days. On your own account nothing stops you from overtrading after a loss. The traders who make the switch well usually keep the same limits they used on their funded account.

Execution and costs

On a live account you pay real spreads and commissions, and your fills depend on the market. Check a broker's pricing, platform and withdrawal options before you deposit.

Withdrawals work differently

Funded accounts pay rewards on a schedule: every 14 days at Clarity, or weekly with Express Payouts. With your own account you can usually deposit and withdraw when you like, subject to the broker's terms.

A step-by-step way to start

  1. Write your rules down. Copy the limits from your funded account: a daily loss cap, a maximum drawdown you'll accept and a maximum risk per trade.
  2. Open a demo account first. Use the same platform you already know so the only new variable is the broker.
  3. Fund a small amount. Use money you can afford to lose. Some traders start with part of a payout instead of savings.
  4. Trade the same strategy. Don't use your personal account to try ideas you'd never risk on a funded account.
  5. Review monthly. Compare results on your personal and funded accounts. If one starts to lag, find out why before you add money.

Staying on the platform you already use

Switching platforms at the same time as switching to real money adds risk you don't need. If you trade on TradeLocker at Clarity Traders, Clarity FX is an ECN broker on TradeLocker too. It offers forex and crypto pairs on desktop, iOS and Android, demo and live accounts, and deposits in crypto such as Bitcoin, Ethereum and Tether.

Clarity FX is a separate service from Clarity Traders' simulated accounts, with its own terms and requirements, and availability depends on where you live. Read its terms before you open a live account.

Should you stop prop trading?

Not necessarily. A funded account gives you a large balance for a fixed fee, and a personal account lets you build your own capital over time. Many traders keep both: funded accounts for size, a personal account for long-term growth. Track both with the same journal so you can compare them honestly. If you want a dashboard for that, Clarity Tracking connects TradeLocker, MT5 and other platforms, and your first month is free with code CLARITY100.

Frequently asked questions

Can I trade my own account and a funded account at the same time?

Generally yes, as long as you follow each account's rules. Check the trading policies for anything about copying trades between accounts.

How much should I start with?

Only what you can afford to lose. A small first deposit lets you test the broker, the costs and your own discipline before more is at stake.

Is a demo account worth it if I'm already funded?

Yes. It lets you check pricing, execution and the deposit process with no risk, and it shows whether trading real money changes how you trade.
